Potty Training Boys

Potty training boys can be a bit of a challenge and is quite a bit different then potty training little girls. Boys tend to stay in diapers longer than girls and take a little longer to get a hold of the whole "potty" thing. Stay patient and use some of the tips and techniques below and before you know it your little man will be using the potty like a pro.

Tip #1 For Potty Training Boys - Don't Push Him

Potty training seems to be a little faster and easier for girls than boys. Give your little guy some time. Don't push him to start potty training and be patient when he does start to show interest. Of course a little encouragement is ok and you should show your appreciation for his tries. A great way to get him interested is to have him watch Dad use the potty.

Tip #2 For Potty Training Boys - A Male Role Model

As I just mentioned, watching Dad (or any other male role model) is a great way to get your little man interested in potty training. He will also grasp the general concept of what is expected from him by watching another "big guy" use the bathroom.

Tip #3 For Potty Training Boys - Start Him Sitting Down

It's usually easier to start the potty training process by having him sit on a potty. While it's much more interesting and fun to pee standing up, it also takes  quite a bit of coordination - more than your little guy can handle in the beginning. Start by using either  a standalone potty, or a potty chair insert. From there  you can graduate him to using the big potty sitting down.

Tip #4 For Potty Training Boys - Time For Target Practice

After he masters using the potty sitting down it's time to work on peeing standing up. You may need to get him a little step stool to get him up high to comfortably pee standing up. If you are in a public restroom, stand directly behind him and have him stand on your shoes for a little extra lift.

You can help him practice his aim by throwing a cheerio in the bowl, or drawing a target on a piece of toilet paper and floating it on the water.  Having something to aim for makes target practice more fun and he'll get the hang of it pretty quick.
