There are quite a few things you can do to
make sure your child is safe during potty training. It may surprise you to
hear that a child could potentially drown if the head gets stuck in the
toilet. To avoid this and other potential potty dangers, keep the following
safety tips in mind.
Never Leave Your Child Alone In The
Bathroom
The first and most important safety rule is to not send your child to the
bathroom alone. Always go with your child to supervise the trip to the
potty.
Get Appropriate Equipment
Accidents can happen when your child tries to get on the toilet without a
stool, or doesn't have a potty seat insert. Make sure you equipment that
makes it easy and safe for your child to use the toilet. Don't forget about
the sink either. A sturdy stepstool will allow your child to reach the sink
safely to wash hands.
Don't Leave Appliances Plugged In
Make sure you don't have appliances like a hairdryer or curling iron plugged
in. Your child could knock them in the toilet or sink. Make it a habit to
store these electrical appliances in a locked cabinet when you are not using
them.
Teach Your Child Proper Hygiene
Teach your child to wash his or her hands after using the potty from the
start. Use antibacterial soap and teach your child to lather to soap while
counting slowly to 10. That will give the antibacterial solution plenty of
time to kill any bacteria.
Use A Rug
Make sure you have a rug in the bathroom in front of both the toilet and the
sink. Kids love water and will splash water from the sink into the bathroom
floor. Wet tiles can be very slipper and you don't want your child to slip
and fall. In a worse case scenario your child could hit is head on the
bathtub or toilet, causing serious injuries. Keep a rug in the floor to
prevent slipping.
