The hardest part about potty training for us is that our 3 year old little girl just hates to go on the potty at home. I ask her, i have put her on it, dangled her feet in the bath tub (just before a bath) and then sat her on the potty - still didn’t work. she goes all the time at school but not for myself, my husband, or either sets of grandparents. I have been trying for about 6 months now to no avail. Your steps seemed to help a little as i have actually gotten her to sit on her potty - but then she goes to our potty and then just gets disinterested. She will sit for about 10 minutes between both potties but never goes. Most times she will wet herself in her diaper and then say she has to go potty.

From what you are describing it sounds like your daughter is definitely ready to be potty trained. In fact, she is basically potty trained at school already. What she is doing at home sounds more like a power struggle and a way for her to claim her independence.

Simply asking her to use the potty or making her sit on it will not get you very far since she sees it as her way (not using the potty at home) vs. your way and she is determine to win. Instead, find a way around this little power struggle by giving her options so she can feel in charge.

Ask her if she would like top potty in the potty chair or in the big toilet. Give her a choice on what pair of panties to wear, or even better – take her to the store to pick out her own big girl panties. Give her as many options and choices as you can think of. It’s all about empowering her, making her feel like a big girl in charge and taking the focus away from just the “does she, or doesn’t she potty at home”.

I have tried and tried to get my own 3 year old to use the potty consistently and she just won’t when she’s fully clothed! If I let her run about with only a dress or a shirt on she will faithfully use her potty chair, but the second her butt is covered she reverts back to being a baby and with pull-ups it’s a joke, she’s just in plus sized diapers since she’s too big for regular diapers. I need her trained before she goes off to school in the fall!

My 4.5 year old is EXACTLY like this, except that we have tried the let her pick her own panties, ignore the problem, use a timer, and nothing seems to work. Any ideas? We are getting desperate!
